Vulcan, a new convention to be held in Tampa at the end of the month, will try to set a new world record for the most people dressed as characters from the television series and movies.
May 1 is the day for fans who wish to try to break the current world record, which was set on Valentine’s Day this year in England. In that event, ninety-nine fans assembled to set the record.
Vulcan expects to break that record, as the three-day convention is expected to draw five hundred or more attendees. “I have ninety-nine just from people coming to do the world record,” said Johnothan Babb, head of a local Star Trek club hosting the attempt to set the world record.
Fans do not need to attend the convention to be part of the attempt to set the world record. They must only show up at the Doubletree Hotel, on Cypress Avenue in Tampa, and meet at the hotel pool about 11 A.M. on Saturday.
Characters must be authentic, from any of the televised series or movies, or from novels or comic books. “You can’t just make one up,” said Babb.
Vulcan, a newly-formed sci-fi convention company, is co-owned by Fernando Martinez and Javier Garcia. Martinez has fifteen years working and partnering on numerous successful sci-fi conventions and Garcia has twelve years of event planning and coordination experience as well as experience working on sci-fi conventions.
Vulcan will be held from Apr 30-May 2 in Tampa. Guest stars include Christopher Lloyd (Star Trek: The Search For Spock: Kruge) and Michael Shanks (Stargate) with bonus guests: Gary Graham (Star Trek: Enterprise: Ambassador Soval), William Morgan Sheppard (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country), Catherine Hicks (Star Trek: The Voyage Home), Tony Todd (Kurn, Adult Jake Sisko), Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap), Sally Kellerman and Gary Lockwood (original series: Where No Man Has Gone Before).
